πŸ’‘ Tinkering With Ideas #062: Finances and quarterly goals

β€œIt’s income tax time again, Americans: time to gather up those receipts, get out those tax forms, sharpen up that pencil, and stab yourself in the aorta.” - Dave Barry

Hello, fellow tinkerers! πŸ‘‹

End of Q1. Tax deadlines looming in the U.S. What a time, huh?

1) Reflection:

Last year, I started thinking about goals differently. Instead of tracking anything on an annual basis, I started setting quarterly goals. Like "What do I want to get done this quarter?" (and tracked my progress in Notion). 90-day plans make my goals feel much more manageable. I'll usually plan a few quarters out (like a roadmap), but only focus on accomplishing things in the current quarter.

You can read more about 90-day goals here.

2) Product

Lots of self-employed people I know keep their business expenses low. And I get it: the less overhead you have, the more profitable you are.

But if you're running your own business, you should also think about products, apps, and tools that make your job easier. Your time is literally money. And some things you pay for might improve your mental health or your connection to other people (like paid communities, for example). Here are some things in my freelance budget that are worth every penny.

Plus, business expenses are a tax write-off. 😁

3) Tip

A friend of mine was working on her taxes as a freelancer and told me that she spent four hours gathering information for her accountant. She asked if anything would ease this process (and she doesn't use accounting software).

And yes! I told her to set up some folders in her Google Drive. Some information β€” like her LLC formation docs β€” she will likely only need to provide one time (unless she changes accountants). I told her to set up separate folders for anything else, like receipts, quarterly tax payments, etc. When I provided documentation to my own accountant this year, it probably only took 20 minutes, max, because everything was already organized.

β†’ In addition to a quarterly review, here is my annual reflection as a freelancer.

β†’ Here is a free checklist you can use to review your business quarterly.

β†’ Amid a ton of AI slop, I think the demand for high-quality work is higher than ever.

That's it for this issue of Tinkering! See you again in two weeks.

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. My kids went back to school on Monday after 16 days of winter break. During that time, I did very little other than watch Christmas movies and eat Christmas food. But I'm also a very routine-based person, so I am thrilled to be back to a "normal" week this week. (Plus the house is gloriously quiet during the day). If your goal is to automate more things in your life in 2026, here's a free guide to getting started. Download 1) Reflection If you've been...

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Tuesday. I decided to send this a day early because it's CHRISTMAS WEEK. Which means my house is full of cookies, Chex Mix, Trader Joe's Winter Wake Up Tea, and children who don't have school. 1) Reflection: As I announced last week, I'm hosting a workshop in January: Reflect and Plan. It's a 4-week email series with guided reflection prompts, plus a private Slack community to do the work alongside other solopreneurs. Starts January 5th. I'm going to be doing...

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. My kids have a countdown going of the number of days left in the school year before winter break (now 8). Which is basically the same as the number of working days I have left. If you, too, are in a countdown to the holidays, I hope the days pass quickly and then you can relax with friends, family, or however you spend the holiday season. πŸŽ„ 1) Announcement I'm hosting my first webinar since my brain surgery this July. Woo hoo! I've partnered with Alt...
