Tinkering With Ideas #069: Thoughts while recovering

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹

Happy Wednesday. As you're reading this, I'm recovering from brain surgery. This email was pre-scheduled, and I'll send out an update once I'm able to.

If you'd like to follow the journey of Betty the Brain Tumor (yes, I named the tumor), you can read updates here.

1) Reflection:

After I announced my brain tumor, I've been overwhelmed and humbled by messages from people and offers to help.

A person who will be invaluable to my writing during recovery is Elisa Douchette. She offered to help edit blog posts. I can dictate a post for my personal blog, use Zapier to send it to Elisa, she will edit the transcript, and my VA will publish it to my blog.

Writing is always how I process navigating the world, and it's important to me that I be able to do so while recovering. I'm so grateful for Elisa.

You can check out her newsletter and other resources here.

2) Product

For a long time, I used a giant dry-erase calendar on our wall, but eventually our lives got too complicated. Now, I use a Skylight calendar. There's a countertop version, but I have the giant wall version. It syncs our Google calendar, plus it has other features like menu planning and task lists.

My parents will be helping with the kids while I'm recovering. We rely heavily on our family calendar. It should be easy to follow with the Skylight calendar.

3) Tip

I start every day with New York Times games (Wordle, Strands, and Connections), and end my day with Duolingo. I had to pre-emptively break my 450+ day Duolingo streak, because I know that it will break when I'm recovering from surgery.

Someone recently asked me: Why is the streak so important to you? And I had to think. Is it the dopamine hit of maintaining the streak? Or because I want to do something for me? Something to think about if you are also motivated by streaks.

โ†’ If you want to support my brain surgery recovery, I have a GoFundMe.

โ†’ Here's how I've automated pieces of my blog publishing process while I'm recovering.

โ†’ Why my fellow solopreneur and freelance friends have been everything as I've prepped for this surgery.

That's it for this issue of Tinkering! See you again in two weeks.

Cheers,
Anna

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. I'm now four weeks post brain surgery. I still have some facial paralysis on the left side and double vision. I saw the neurosurgeon earlier this week, and he said, considering all the potential outcomes of the surgery, I'm doing remarkably well. Time (and physical therapy) will help me heal. Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages. I've read them all, even if I haven't replied (I get tired very easily, so I spend very little of my day at the...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ This is the first in a series of newsletter takeovers while I recover from brain surgery. First up is Liam Carnahan. I attended a webinar Liam hosted a few months ago and then he attended one of mine. I was supposed to host a workshop for his community but then, brain tumor. I was thrilled that Liam reached out and offered to write something for my newsletter. Some quick facts about Liam: He's the co-host of FLX: Freelance Success, a community for freelancers. He's an...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Well, here we go. 13 days until I have surgery to remove a brain tumor. The next several issues of Tinkering With Ideas that land in your inbox will have been pre-written and pre-scheduled. Because the next issue will be only one day post-surgery, I doubt it will include an update. Surgery is expected to take 10-12 hours (yikes). But I'll try to get an update added to a subsequent issue, or send out a separate email. If you'd like to follow the journey of Betty the...
