Tinkering With Ideas #060: What's in your portfolio?

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹

Happy Wednesday. I'm writing this newsletter from a hotel in Florida while on vacation with my family. Even though I plan my content pretty far in advance, the writing part doesn't usually happen until a few days before. That's a Someday Goal, that I can have everything written in advance...

If you'd like to follow my ongoing brain surgery recovery you can read updates here.

1) Reflection:

I spent some time last week helping a friend set up a LinkedIn profile for the first time. She's changing careers, intending to move from the public sector to the private. And while I think LinkedIn is the modern resume, I also think we are so much more than our resume.

Whether you want to change careers or want to go out on your own, you have to think about how to display your portfolio of experiences, rather than a ladder career that starts at the bottom and keeps moving up. Show how you are able to move wide.

2) Product

If you create content online, you know that it is a chore to maintain a portfolio. Over the years, I’ve written literally hundreds of articles for clients. I need to keep track of the URLs, plus I need a backup copy (you know, in case the client heavily edits the article or takes it offline…)

Authory creates a beautiful online portfolio for you β€” and it self-updates!! Authory will automatically pull in your published work, as well as any podcasts and videos you want to include. You can organize your content into different collections, like by topic or client. And Authory has automated backups: an absolute must. Check out Authory here.

3) Tip

Does your portfolio show off your best work? Do you collect take the time to collect testimonials from clients? How do people even find your portfolio? Check out some tips to make sure your portfolio is in tip-top shape here.

β†’ I vented into the universe about AI-generated comments on LinkedIn.

β†’ But if you do go on LinkedIn and want to save a list of profiles to make it easier to engage with people, here's how to do that.

That's it for this issue of Tinkering! See you again in two weeks.

Cheers,
Anna

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. My kids have a countdown going of the number of days left in the school year before winter break (now 8). Which is basically the same as the number of working days I have left. If you, too, are in a countdown to the holidays, I hope the days pass quickly and then you can relax with friends, family, or however you spend the holiday season. πŸŽ„ 1) Announcement I'm hosting my first webinar since my brain surgery this July. Woo hoo! I've partnered with Alt...

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. If you're in the U.S., you're likely gearing up for Thanksgiving and the Black Friday Cyber Monday shenanigans that stores try to push on consumers. My friend Angela has the following advice: Stop checking your email. Stop checking your texts. Stay off the internet. Heck, just close your laptop until December 3rd. You don't need that thing. 1) Reflection: Since I returned to work from brain surgery a few months ago, I've talked a lot about what it was...

Hello, fellow tinkerer πŸ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. I'm co-hosting a panel next week: How to Take Long-Term Leave as a Freelancer. What happens if you work for yourself and need to take extended time off? Medical leave, maternity leave, sabbatical? I ended up taking about two months off after brain surgery this year. This panel includes me and three other people who've actually taken long-term leave. This free workshop includes conversations, breakout sessions, and practical tips. Join us on November...
