Tinkering With Ideas #065: Travel things

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹

Happy Wednesday. I'm writing this from the airport in Barcelona, waiting for my flight back to the U.S. My first trip to Europe (first of many, I hope), and my first long trip away from my family.

1) Reflection:

When I booked this trip, I didn't realize that I'd be in Spain for Mother's Day. By that point, I'd been gone for several days, and I missed my family like crazy.

I think solo trips are important โ€” we all need some time alone โ€” but I also think, for me, I need to keep my trips shorter, at least until my kids are older. It's logistically and emotionally hard. I love spending time with my family and would rather take long trips with them.

2) Product

I heard about the trtl neck pillow on the Wirecutter podcast, so I got one for the long flight. It looks ridiculous, but it works a lot better than traditional neck pillows because it kind of holds your head in place. I managed to get some sleep on the plane.

3) Tip

Speaking of sleep, jet lag is terrible. But I used an app called Timeshifter, and it helped โ€” a lot. You put in your flight info and it will tell you exactly how to prep for the time zone change based on your destination. When to sleep, when to force yourself to stay awake, when to drink coffee, etc.

I followed the recommendations on the way to Barcelona and recovered from jet lag quickly. (We'll see how it works in the reverse now that I'm home!)

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. I'm now four weeks post brain surgery. I still have some facial paralysis on the left side and double vision. I saw the neurosurgeon earlier this week, and he said, considering all the potential outcomes of the surgery, I'm doing remarkably well. Time (and physical therapy) will help me heal. Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages. I've read them all, even if I haven't replied (I get tired very easily, so I spend very little of my day at the...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ This is the first in a series of newsletter takeovers while I recover from brain surgery. First up is Liam Carnahan. I attended a webinar Liam hosted a few months ago and then he attended one of mine. I was supposed to host a workshop for his community but then, brain tumor. I was thrilled that Liam reached out and offered to write something for my newsletter. Some quick facts about Liam: He's the co-host of FLX: Freelance Success, a community for freelancers. He's an...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. As you're reading this, I'm recovering from brain surgery. This email was pre-scheduled, and I'll send out an update once I'm able to. If you'd like to follow the journey of Betty the Brain Tumor (yes, I named the tumor), you can read updates here. 1) Reflection: After I announced my brain tumor, I've been overwhelmed and humbled by messages from people and offers to help. A person who will be invaluable to my writing during recovery is Elisa...
