Tinkering With Ideas #064: Dreaming of home improvement projects

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹

Happy Wednesday. I am headed to Spain in 5 days and am so excited. It will be my first trip to Europe. I am a master planner, but my travel companion (a longtime friend) is much more chill. So we'll see if I can absorb her "go with the flow" attitude.

If you've got any travel tips for long flights โ€” please reply and let me know!!

1) Reflection:

I was listening to a podcast last week, and it mentioned an app that might be a good replacement for an app I'm currently using. A friend of mine also uses this app and raves about it.

But then I had to remind myself that exploring a new app takes time. Would I get enough benefit? Would it be worth the amount of time it would take to switch?

I was actually quite proud of myself for not exploring another app. I have a never-ending list of things to do, and adding another project into the mix is a distraction.

2) Product

I used ChatGPT to help me reimagine a bathroom. First, I uploaded a photo of our current bathroom:

Then I asked ChatGPT to change certain elements, like the wall color, trim, and floor. I searched online to find the specific paint color and flooring I wanted, and uploaded those images also.

I had to do these one at a time, with instructions to remain as close to the original image as possible. But the result gave me a good idea of what the changes would look like.

If you're thinking about a home improvement, I highly recommend trying this to get an idea of the end result.

3) Tip

Home improvements are fun to think about, but there's also a money factor... In addition to fun stuff, like new paint or upgrades, there's also the not-so-fun stuff, like home repairs.

I keep a running list of improvements we'd like to do and the approximate cost. I also have a savings account specifically designated for improvements and repairs. Every month, I put money aside in the account.

When we've saved up enough, we can do some type of home improvement project. Or if we need a major repair, the money is available for us to use.

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. My kids are eagerly counting down the days left in the school year (five, including today), and then summer break begins. Do you love this newsletter and look forward to receiving it every week? Forward it to a friend! Sharing is caring. ๐Ÿ’Œ 1) Reflection: My kids have attended the same summer camp since they were little, but this year will be a bit different. My oldest has aged out of the camp, and my middle child has opted only to attend camp for a...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. I'm writing this from the airport in Barcelona, waiting for my flight back to the U.S. My first trip to Europe (first of many, I hope), and my first long trip away from my family. 1) Reflection: When I booked this trip, I didn't realize that I'd be in Spain for Mother's Day. By that point, I'd been gone for several days, and I missed my family like crazy. I think solo trips are important โ€” we all need some time alone โ€” but I also think, for me, I need...

Hello, fellow tinkerer ๐Ÿ‘‹ Happy Wednesday. If you're located in the U.S., you've survived the horror known as the Tax Filing Deadline. (Survived, while possibly not unscathed...) If you're outside of the U.S. let me paint a picture: My tax return last year was 43 pages long. Most Americans file and just pray they're doing it correctly because tax returns are so complex. It's a ghastly system. 1) Reflection: Have you heard of vibe coding at all? Vibe coding uses AI and lets people build apps โ€”...
